Energizer 1: Dynamics of Implementation: The Hula Hoop Way

Hulla-HukObjective: To stimulate leadership and cooperation and encourage participants to help one another to effectively fulfill their tasks and achieve the goals.

Step and tasks:

  1. Divide participants into three groups and let them form circles. Each group should have one process controller (Ramon, Bountham and Michael) and one observer per group (VIP).
  2. Ask participants to stand in their circles. All members should point out index fingers directed to the middle of the circle at their chest level. The process controller places the Hola Hoops on the fingers.
  3. The group task will be to bring the hola hoop to the ground level and back to its original position (chest level) while maintaining a balanced level. No one should loose a member’s finger from the hoop, else the group will be asked to re-start from chest level by the process controller.
  4. Once the hoop is in the ground level, the process controller will count 1 to 5 before the group can bring it up to the chest level once again. Wait for the signal of the process controller.
  5. Do round 2 but allow the groups to plan and set their own strategies.

Moderator

1. What was the hola hoop in “real life”?

2. Why do we use only one finger (and not all)?

3. Can a balance be achieved? Some are taller than others? What is this in a project?

4. Who has the real advantage, the tall ones or the short ones?

5. How can we work together as a team considering imbalances in competencies?

6. How will the leader effectively lead considering the imbalances?

7. What can we bring to HRDME to improve implementation of activities in 2009?

Observers/ Process Controllers:

Please observe the following:

  1. Do you feel that the group had team spirit? What are the characteristics of a good team? Did you see these characters in the group?
  2. Did the group use a leader? Has there been an informal leader? Was the leader useful to achieving the goal?
  3. Which one was better, round 1 or round 2?
  4. What are the characteristics of the winning group? How about the losing one?
  5. What lessons can be applied in the HRDME?

Energizer 2: Achieving the Indicators

Objective: To stimulate internal coordination, collaboration and team work in strategy implementation which are essential features needed by partner organizations in achieving the indicator results.

Step and tasks:

  1. Divide participants into three groups. Let each group form one straight line. Each group should have one process controller (Ramon, Bountham and Michael) and one observer per group (VIP).
  2. Show to the participants the results indicator and inform them that they should bring the private sector (represented by an A-4 paper with lots of people drawn on them). Process controller will give the paper to the groups.
  3. Give each group member US$ 1.0 Million (represented by a-4 paper with money drawn on it). Distribute one A4 paper per member.
  4. Moderator announces that everyone in the group can do whatever they want but not directly touch the private sector to usher it in achieving the indicator results.  Note: No can touch the other group’s private sector too.
  5. The first group to help the private sector achieve the indicator results wins!
  6. Start simultaneously at the count of 3.
  7. Do a round 2 if needed (but allow 5-minute planning)
